Rodney’s Pillar: A Scenic Dog Walk in Shropshire

Looking for a picturesque dog walk that combines history, nature, and panoramic views? Rodney’s Pillar in the Breidden Hills offers all this and more—a perfect outing for you and your dog. Its also one of my favourites!

📍 About Rodney’s Pillar

Perched atop Breidden Hill near Criggion, Rodney’s Pillar is a 54-foot monument erected in 1781 to honor Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney's naval victories. Standing at approximately 1,200 feet above sea level, it provides sweeping vistas across Shropshire and into Wales and they really are just amazing!

🐕 Dog-Friendly Trails

The walk to Rodney’s Pillar is moderately challenging, featuring a steady incline through woodlands and open fields. The main trail is well-marked and spans about 5 miles round trip. While dogs will enjoy the freedom to explore, it's advisable to keep them on a lead, I can also recommend walking this as a sunrise walk as its truly beautiful.

🌿 What to Expect

  • Terrain: A mix of gravel paths, grassy slopes, and woodland trails.

  • Scenery: Panoramic views of the River Severn, Offa’s Dyke Path, and the Shropshire countryside.

  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for local fauna, including sheep and various bird species.

  • Facilities: Limited—plan accordingly by bringing water and snacks for both you and your dog. Plenty of parking is available.

🧭 Getting There

The most common starting point is the Forestry Commission car park in Criggion. From there, follow the marked trail leading up to the pillar.
