Exploring Nesscliffe Hill: A Dog-Friendly Adventure in Shropshire

Another one of my Favorite walks is Nesscliffe Hill close to the Wales / Shropshire border.

📍 About Nesscliffe Hill

Situated near the village of Nesscliffe, this 70-hectare countryside heritage site encompasses wooded hills, a heather-covered ridge, and offers expansive views over the Shropshire countryside and Welsh hills. The area is rich in history, featuring an Iron Age hillfort and the legendary Kynaston’s Cave, once the hideout of the infamous highwayman Humphrey Kynaston and his horse, Beelzebub .

🐕 Dog-Friendly Trails

Nesscliffe Hill boasts a network of trails suitable for all abilities. The 3.1-mile Nesscliffe Hills and the Cliffe Loop is a popular choice, generally considered an easy route that takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead.

🌿 What to Expect

  • Terrain: A mix of gravel paths, grassy slopes, and woodland trails.

  • Scenery: Panoramic views of the Shropshire countryside and Welsh hills.

  • Points of Interest: Kynaston’s Cave and the Iron Age hillfort.

  • Facilities: Free parking is available in designated car parks.

🧭 Getting There

Nesscliffe Hill is located just off the A5, approximately halfway between Shrewsbury and Oswestry. The nearest postcode for satnav users is SY4 1DG .
